Birth Story - Thursday (The Evening), January 19, 2012

Did I mention I threw up after the first "re-up". If I did, I'm repeating myself. If I didn't it's important as it will tie into a later post.
The first "re-up" lasted between 30 minutes to an hour. When that time lapsed, I was once again in excruciating labor pain.
Yes, I know I shouldn't complain; women give birth without the aid of drugs every day. Well, I'm not that strong of a woman when it pertains to birthing.
The anesthesiologist was called back in and gave me my second "re-up" of the epidural. Matt and the anesthesiologist spoke in the hall. He explained that where I was having the pain with the epidural that my hips hadn't spread enough for the baby to come out and I'd be having a c-section. This was a little after 12:00pm. If you remember, Dr. Arthur was supposed to come back and check on me at this time. She neglected to check on me; however, Matt said he saw her come back and deliver a few women.
From noon to 5:00pm I continued to labor. The nurses continued to check if I dilated any further than 1 centimeter. By 5:00pm (11 hours after labor was induced) I had dilated to 3 centimeters.

Someone got ahold of my phone and snapped this beautiful picture of me. Here I am, waiting for the drugs to work again.

At 5:15pm, after the practice was closed, Dr. Arthur came back to the hospital. She checked my progress and told us what we already knew, c-section. The nursing staff began to prep me for surgery. I donned a beautiful hair net, that didn't even contain my hair, and Matt put on his sterile jumpsuit.

I was wheeled into the OR where I was given the most wonderful drug! Once again, the anesthesiologist had me lean forward (this time my feet were on a chair which allowed my belly to fit between my legs) and he inserted another needle into my spine. That's right, I got the spinal block.
If you've lost count here's what's been injected into me since Wednesday evening:
* magnesium sulfate (IV drip) multiple bags
* antibiotic (IV drip) multiple bags
* saline (IV drip) multiple bags
* epidural (first injection and 2 "re-ups")
* spinal block
Immediately after the spinal block, the staff laid me on my back. Right after laying down, I felt that wonderful urge to throw up. Of course, no sooner did I say it out loud I had my head turned and was vomiting.
After vomiting, the paper partition went up and I felt pressure and smelled burnt flesh.
I'm thinking "oh shit" they've started, Matt's not in here. I asked multiple times where he was and the staff kept assuring me that he was coming.
It seemed like hours until Matt showed up. No sooner after he sat down, Matt was peaking over the partition and got to see Liam being pulled out of me.
Liam was a very quiet boy. The nurses had to rub him to get a squeak of a cry out. Liam's first order of business was to pee on the nurses.
Way to go!

Matt says that Liam was very alert in the OR and the nursery.
Once the Apgar was completed (he scored 8/9) Matt and Liam left for the nursery and I stayed behind to be put back together.

After two hours in recovery and a little morphine later, I was wheeled into my private room where I got to hold Liam for the first time.

Just wait until you hear about the following day...
